CHAPTER 24

I check my phone again and sigh. After an hour of playing Candy Crush, my phone gave me the death signal of 20% battery, and I don't want to go snooping around looking for a phone charger. It's been another half hour since I gave up on my Candy Crush level, and I'm wondering how much longer I'll last. It's been a long day, and I just want Connor to get here so I can go home.

I'm still a little damp from the rain, and my ass is numb from sitting on the floor.

The life of an FBI agent has never been so glamorous.

There's a little light from the cracks around the front door, seeping in from the hallway. For half a second, the light goes out when someone walks by. And then I hear the sound of keys tinkling around, and I know he's here. I push myself up and stand there, waiting.

The door unlocks, and light comes into the apartment. Not much, but a little. The keys click together as he pulls them out of the door.

Even though I'm standing out in the open, he hasn't seen me yet, or if he has, he hasn't acknowledged me. I hear him take a few steps into the apartment, and then he freezes. We're both in the dark, and yet I feel like he knows I'm here.

"Beck?" he asks. He flips the light on before I answer, and when he sees me, I see the painful recognition. "Shit."

"It's good to see you, too." I'm not sure if the reaction is from the fact he guessed wrong or the fact that it's me.

"Cupcake, how did you get in?" he asks.

"I'm an FBI agent. Don't you think I've learned a few things along the way?"

He tosses his keys onto the kitchen counter and pinches the bridge of his nose. In the short time I've known him, I've realized that usually means I'm being a pain in the ass, and that he's frustrated as hell.

"Okay, you picked the lock. I just moved in; the locks need to be updated. You got me on that." He shakes his head. "You are the only person who can break into where ever I live. I don't understand it."

My mind wanders back to December. Before we worked together on the Rossett case, I was actually investigating Connor, the rogue agent. A mishap ended up with a bullet in his leg, and I took the opportunity to snoop in his apartment.

"So why are you involved in drugs now?" I ask. I have no idea how long this conversation will last, so I don't want to waste time.

"Cupcake, are we really going to go straight to that?"

"What do you think we would do?" I ask.

"Would you be interested in a drink?" he asks, hoping to avoid my question.

"Maybe just one." Of course I know it won't end with just one, but if I tell him that, I can at least have plausible deniability.

"A beer work?"

"Sure."

A moment later, Connor wanders back into the living room where I'm standing and hands me a beer.
